Sodium carbonate (Na₂CO₃), commonly known as soda ash or pure alkali, is a white, water-soluble salt with a melting point of 851°C. It occurs naturally as trona ore or is synthesized industrially through the Solvay process. The compound exhibits strong alkalinity, with aqueous solutions reaching pH 11–12 at 1% concentration.

Its applications span sectors with remarkable breadth. Glass manufacturing consumes roughly half global production; soda ash lowers silica melting temperatures from 1700°C to manageable furnace ranges, enabling window, bottle, and fiberglass production. Detergent builders employ it to soften water by precipitating calcium and magnesium ions, boosting surfactant effectiveness. Pulp mills use it in Kraft recovery cycles, converting spent liquor back into cooking chemicals.

Environmental and emerging applications gain traction. Flue gas desulfurization systems inject sodium carbonate to capture sulfur dioxide emissions. Lithium carbonate extraction for battery cathodes increasingly relies on soda ash as precipitating agent, linking the material to electric vehicle supply chains.

Product grades differentiate markets. Dense soda ash, produced by crystallization under controlled cooling, flows freely for automated glass furnaces. Light grade, more voluminous and reactive, suits chemical synthesis and water treatment. Specialty refined grades with iron content below 50 ppm serve optical glass and pharmaceutical applications where color sensitivity demands absolute purity.
