Primary consumption flows to electrolytic magnesium production. Downs cells operate at 680–720°C; any residual water hydrolyzes to corrosive HCl and MgO slag, destroying cell economics. Titanium metallurgy employs it similarly for magnesium regeneration in Kroll process loops.
Construction applications utilize its reaction with magnesium oxide to form Sorel cement, valued for rapid setting and fire resistance in industrial flooring and grinding wheels.
