Magnesium sulfate heptahydrate (MgSO₄·7H₂O), is a hydrated inorganic salt with seven water molecules bound to each magnesium sulfate unit. It appears as colorless or white monoclinic crystals, bitter in taste, with a density of 1.68 g/cm³.
The compound effloresces in dry air and dissolves readily in water with mild cooling. Complete dehydration occurs at 250°C.
Its uses are surprisingly varied. Tomato growers in Florida dissolve it in drip lines to correct magnesium deficiency spotted as yellowing between leaf veins. In a Lagos maternity ward, a 4-gram intravenous dose can halt eclamptic seizures within minutes. Textile mills in Gujarat use the same crystals to weight silk, giving fabric that distinctive cool, heavy drape. Even molecular biologists rely on it-when precipitating DNA from solution, the salt's ionic strength does the sorting work.
